Empowering Communication for All

May is Speech-Language-Hearing Awareness Month—a time to highlight the importance of communication and the critical role speech-language pathologists and audiologists play in supporting individuals of all ages. At Flourishing Lives, we are dedicated to helping children develop the communication skills they need to express themselves, connect with others, and thrive in their environments.

Why Communication Matters

Communication is how we connect with the world around us. For kids, strong speech and language skills are key to learning, making friends, and sharing their thoughts and feelings. But sometimes, children may have a harder time in these areas. The good news is that noticing these challenges early and getting support can make a big difference in their development.

Recognizing Speech and Language Challenges

Some indicators your child may benefit from speech or language support include:

  • Difficulty pronouncing sounds or forming words clearly
  • Limited vocabulary or trouble finding the right words
  • Difficulty understanding instructions or responding appropriately
  • Struggling to form sentences or express thoughts clearly
  • Stuttering or cluttering
  • Challenges with social communication and making friends
  • Primarily communicating in words/phrases from TV shows, movies, and music

If one or more of these indicators sound like your child, it’s important to seek support from one of our speech-language pathologists (SLPs), who can evaluate your child’s needs and create a personalized treatment plan.

How Speech-Language Pathology Supports Communication Skills

Speech services are highly individualized services designed to meet each child’s specific needs. At Flourishing Lives, our SLPs use an engaging, child-led, play-based approach to help children build and expand communication skills.

Speech Therapy Can Help With:

  • Speech Sound Disorders: Improving pronunciation and intelligibility
  • Language Development: Enhancing vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure
  • Social Communication: Building skills to navigate conversations and form friendships
  • Fluency: Supporting children who stutter or clutter their words
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): Supporting the development and use of alternative forms of communication

Early Intervention Makes a Difference

Early intervention is key to setting a child up for success and helping them reach their full potential. Our compassionate team works closely with families to provide practical strategies for continued growth at home and in everyday environments.

Empowering Families Through Parent Training

At Flourishing Lives, we believe that parents and caregivers play a vital role in their child’s progress. That’s why we offer parent training during each session. Parent training provides practical strategies and techniques that you can use at home to support your child’s communication growth.

Benefits of Parent Training

  • Gain confidence in helping your child practice speech and language skills during everyday routines.
  • Learn how to create enriching language-learning environments at home.
  • Discover techniques to manage communication challenges and encourage interactions that foster learning.
  • Collaborating regularly with your child’s SLP allows you to monitor progress and adjust strategies as needed.

With the right tools and guidance, you can make a meaningful impact on your child’s development, helping them develop and grow their communication abilities.

Patient Spotlight: Kaiden

Meet Kaiden! We are excited to share the incredible progress Kaiden has made on his therapeutic journey. Over the past few months, he has shown tremendous growth not only during speech sessions but also at home. We are incredibly proud of the strides he has taken.

In therapy, Kaiden has made exciting progress with his communication skills. Recently, his AAC device was updated from a 15-icon grid all the way up to a 32-icon grid, and he has been doing an amazing job navigating the new layouts. Kaiden has also demonstrated increased use of various communication methods, including verbal speech, manual signs, and his AAC device, to express a wide range of communication functions. He has used these tools to make comments, ask for help, advocate for himself, and more.

For example, at home, he recently commented, “That is so funny!” while watching a show. During a meal, he expressed his preference by declining a dinner option—an empowering moment of self-advocacy!

Kaiden’s communication continues to blossom, and a huge part of that success is thanks to the hard work and dedication of his amazing mom. She has collaborated with Kaiden’s SLP to customize and add to his AAC device to make it more functional and personalized. Not only that, but she consistently models communication both during sessions and at home, creating meaningful opportunities for Kaiden to grow.

Kaiden’s mom also helped develop a new “Schedule” page on his device to support smoother transitions. Recently, Kaiden was able to say “2 more minutes” with this new page to communicate during a transition in a clear and regulated way.

Kaiden’s communication is expanding every day, and it’s a true testament to his perseverance and the incredible support he receives at home. We are beyond proud of his progress and are so excited to continue cheering him on. Kaiden absolutely deserves this spotlight!

Activity of the Month: Sound Imitation Games

This month’s activity focuses on sound imitation, which is a key factor in kids’ early language development. We love it because it’s great for building listening skills and speech sounds–but it’s also a fun, simple game that doesn’t require any special materials!

How to Play

  1. Make a sound and encourage your child to repeat it after you. Some sounds you might try include imitating animal sounds (such as barks or meows) or nature sounds (such as wind or rain). Be creative!
  2. Ask your child to make up a sound, and then you repeat it back to them.
  3. Take turns making sounds and copying each other.
  4. For extra fun–and to help your child with their motor skills–you can add some gestures, like clapping hands or stomping feet while making the sound.

Recipe of the Month: Ms. Lauren’s Kid-Friendly Happy Belly Gummies

These gummies have a fun texture, mild sweetness, and no artificial ingredients! They’re packed with bovine gelatin, a rich source of collagen and amino acids that help strengthen the gut lining, aid digestion, and keep blood sugar steady with a boost of protein. Plus, they’re made with real fruit juice for a naturally sweet, hydrating treat.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups 100% fruit juice (try apple, berry, or mango for a naturally sweet taste–or whatever your favorite juice flavor is!)
  • ¼ cup high-quality bovine gelatin (such as Great Lakes Wellness gelatin or Perfect Supplements gelatin)
  • 1–2 tbsp honey or maple syrup (optional, for added sweetness if needed)
  • ½ tsp lemon juice (optional, for a little tang)
  • Silicone molds or a small baking dish

Fun Fruit Pairings to Try

  • Mango + orange juice = tropical flavor
  • Apple + cinnamon = cozy fall taste
  • Berry mix = antioxidant boost

Creamy Version

  • Swap ½ cup of juice for coconut milk.

Make It More Fun

  • Use animal or star-shaped molds for a bit more sensory engagement

Directions:

  1. Pour 1 ½ cups of fruit juice into a saucepan. Set the remaining ½ cup aside.
  2. In a small bowl, sprinkle the gelatin powder over the ½ cup of juice and let it sit for 5 minutes until it blooms and thickens. Then mix it all together.
  3. Warm the juice in the saucepan over low heat (do not boil). Stir in honey/maple syrup and lemon juice, if using.
  4. Add the bloomed gelatin mixture to the warm juice. Stir continuously until fully dissolved.
  5. Pour into silicone molds (fun shapes for kids!) or a small greased dish.
  6. Refrigerate for 1–2 hours until firm. If using a dish, cut into bite-sized squares once set.
  7. Enjoy! You can store the gummies in the fridge for up to 1 week.
