A Unique Approach for Autism Spectrum Disorder
A child with autism spectrum disorder may have some challenges in life, but they also have several strengths! At Flourishing Lives, we want to help your child thrive in the best way for them. Our pediatric occupational therapists will work with you and your child to create a customized care plan that suits their needs and interests.
Autism spectrum disorder (abbreviated to ASD or simply autism) is a developmental disorder that impacts how someone learns, communicates, and interacts with the world. It exists on a spectrum, and every child experiences ASD differently. We aim to help your child find the tools they need to succeed.

Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder
There are several signs and symptoms associated with ASD. Here are some of the most common:
- Delayed Language Development: A child with ASD may take longer to speak–or never speak at all (nonverbal autism).
- Vocal Differences: Some kids with ASD may have an unusual pattern in their speech. It may sing-song or flat and robotic.
- Difficulties with Social Interaction: Kids with ASD often struggle in social situations. They might “monologue” about topics that interest them or have trouble maintaining eye contact.
- Repetitive Behaviors: Kids with ASD are often very routine-driven and become upset if something disrupts that routine. They might repeat certain behaviors or words or become hyper-fixated on a particular interest or topic.
- Sensory Issues: Sensory processing disorders, in which a child is either overwhelmed or understimulated by sensory input, are often a symptom of ASD.
However, this is by no means an exhaustive list! If you think your child might have autism spectrum disorder, schedule an appointment with their primary care provider to discuss assessment options. Our pediatric OTs can work to treat the underlying deficits while you wait for an official diagnosis.
A Child-Centered Approach to Care
Occupational therapy isn’t about “curing” ASD (which has no cure). Instead, it’s about helping your child develop the skills and strategies to navigate day-to-day activities, whether excelling in school, completing daily chores, or making new friends.
At Flourishing Lives, we take a child-centered approach to occupational therapy. We work closely with your child to identify the activities that speak to their unique strengths and interests, then adapt those activities to help them improve areas where they might need a little more help. We consider it a huge success if your child sees their sessions as playtime rather than therapy.
We also work to involve parents and other loved ones in the treatment process. We’ll give you the tools you need to continue your child’s therapy at home, helping to ensure a more successful outcome.
